Anthology Markets

If you've just wandered in off the internet, hi and welcome. :) I do these posts every month, so if this post isn't dated in the same month you're in, click here to make sure you're seeing the most recent one. If you want to get an e-mail notification when the listing is posted, get the list a week early, or get a full listing of everything I've found (as opposed to the two months' worth I post here) a week early, you can support my Patreon.

Markets with specific deadlines are listed first, "Until Filled" markets (if any) are at the bottom. There are usually more details on the original site; always click through and read the full guidelines before submitting. Note that some publishers list multiple guidelines on one page, so after you click through you might have to scroll a bit.

31 May 2018 -- Apotheosis 2 -- ed. Jason Andrew

Apotheosis 2 – More Stories of human survival and defiance in a world subjugated by the return of the Elder Gods. Humanity struggled to grow and evolve as a species for thousands of years forever caught in the shadow of a dread threat known only to a devoted few. When the stars are right, the Old Ones will return to claim utter dominion of the world. Lovecraft Mythos stories often climax at the moment of the fateful return of the Elder Gods and the audience is left to ponder what might happen next. This anthology features stories about humanity under the reign of the Elder Gods and ancient terrors.

What do we mean by Lovecraft Mythos stories in relation to Apotheosis? We’re looking for stories inspired by the stories of H.P. Lovecraft and associated writers such as August Derleth, Clark Ashton Smit, Robert E. Howard, Robert Bloch, Henry Kuttner, and Frank Belknap Long. We’re also interested in writers that inspired Lovecraft such as Edgar Allan Poe, Algernon Blackwood and Lord Dunsany. We’re interested in classic mythos gods and monsters and originals that have inspired by the mythos.

Good Fiction Examples:

== Apotheosis: Stories of Human Survival After the Rise of the Elder Gods
== "Boojum" by Elizabeth Bear & Sarah Monette
== "A Colder War" by Charlie Stross
== In the Hall of the Yellow King by Peter Rawlik

What type of stories are we looking for? We’re looking for character-driven stories set during a time in the future where the ancient terrors that once ruled the Earth have claimed complete and utter dominion of the Earth. We’re less concerned about the strict interpretation of the Elder Gods than good stories that deal with real human concerns. How do people survive? How does life change? Will people accept their new gods or will they rebel? What will it mean to be human in such a world of gods and monsters? Surprise us. Don’t give us stories that we’ve read before. We want worlds that feel real populated by characters from different cultures, genders, and ethnicities. Avoid cultural appropriation. Do your homework. We recommend that you read our last anthology to see the types of stories we enjoy.

What types of submissions should I avoid? We’re not as interested in the moment the ancient horrors return and conquer the world, but how humanity survives after the war is lost. Flashbacks are OK, but the story should not be about that time. We enjoy historical mythos fiction, but this is not the anthology for it. Stories must be set in the future. We are not looking for poetry for this anthology.

Submission Details:

== Word-count: 2,000 to 7,000 Worldwide print and e-book rights (exclusive for 6 months, non-exclusive for an additional 30 months).Exceptions will be made for stories accepted for “Best Of” anthologies. Apotheosis will be available in both Print on Demand and e-book formats.
== Submissions open April 1, 2018, and will close at 11:59 PST on May 31, 2018. You may submit at: apotheosis.anthology@gmail.com. (Do not submit before April 1st 2018 or your submission will be deleted.)
== Queries and questions may be sent to: apotheosis.anthology@gmail.com. (You may send queries and questions anytime.) All responses will be accepted or rejected by August 15th, 2018. Please do not query about submitted stories before then. No multiple or simultaneous submissions. Our word count limits are hard for open submissions. Reprints may be submitted, but we’re only accepting three or four at the most. (It should be clearly stated that the submission is a reprint in your cover later or this will be an automatic rejection later.)
== Please use standard format guidelines. If it is difficult to read, we will reject your story. Your story must include your name, address, telephone number, email address, and approximate word count on the first page. Your cover letter should include your complete contact information, story title, approximate word count, and a short bio.
== We’re only accepting a limited number of reprints. If you are submitting a reprint, please tag the subject with #Reprint. If we find out later your submission is a reprint and it wasn’t tagged, it will be dropped from the anthology.
== Payment: 3 cents per word (or 1 cent per word for reprints), paid within 90 days after publication. Plus contributor copy of print and e-book.

31 May 2018 -- Gehenna and Hinnom Chapbooks: Nightscapes, Have You Ever Seen a Portal? and Void Beckoning -- Gehenna and Hinnom

CHAPBOOK 1:

NIGHTSCAPES — Three to four tales of nightmares, night terrors, the unfathomable dreams. All stories for this chapbook must fit into the previously mentioned concepts. Think the fiction of Thomas Ligotti and Jon Padgett meeting the artwork of Zdzisław Beksiński.

WHAT WE WANT:

We are seeking three to four short stories (1,500 to 5,000 Words FIRM). We want your most trippy, disturbing tales that question our notions of reality. Shock us with your imagination, show us how unique and weird your nightmares really are.

CHAPBOOK 2:

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A PORTAL? — Three to four tales of inter-dimensional horror. Portals, gateways, archaic and ancient worlds. All stories submitted must follow these themes. Think The Void meets Event Horizon with a little Lovecraft and Barker tossed into the mix.

WHAT WE WANT:

We are seeking three to four short stories (1,500 to 5,000 Words FIRM). We want your most otherworldly tales. Show us dimensions made of nightmares, ancient god-like entities breaking into our world, mankind unlocking denizens of ethereal planes. Enthrall us with the horrors that lie beyond our universe.

CHAPBOOK 3:

VOID BECKONING — Three to four tales of deep space horror. Terrifying monstrosities on ancient moons, malevolent spirits aboard spaceships, mining facilities on other worlds uncovering ancient evils, infectious body-morphing diseases plaguing orbital stations. Think Dead Space meets Alien and Prometheus.

WHAT WE WANT:

We are seeking three to four short stories (1,500 to 5,000 Words FIRM). We want your cautionary tales of deep space travel, what could possibly lie ahead in the cosmos. Thrill us with the claustrophobia of space in the event of invading creatures, terrify us with tales of ancient evils found deep in the recesses of the universe. Show us what true horror is in deep space.

WHAT WE DON’T WANT:

== Fiction that isn’t speculative. We don’t want any stories that could possibly be based in reality. All fiction must be otherworldly, supernatural, etc.
== Short stories that employ the second person narrative voice.
== Short stories that have been previously published. NO REPRINTS.
== Erotica, fan fiction, or stories with heavy sexual content.
== Fiction that is unoriginal or uses recycled themes. Surprise us!
== As always, the most taboo topics are fine, as long as they are used professionally and respectably. Anything with overuse of vulgarity or purposely gross language for the sake of being gross will not be considered.
== NO SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS TO A SINGLE CHAPBOOK. You are more than welcome to submit one story to each theme, but be aware that no author will appear in more than one chapbook.
== NO MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS UNLESS YOU QUERY FIRST.
== Stories with numerous errors. This should be a given. Always read through your work or have your editor or a friend read through it before sending it anywhere.
== Artwork submissions. We have already hired the artists for the covers.
== Anything that has been rejected previously for a separate submissions call.

Submit fiction in proper manuscript format. If you need help regarding the formatting, follow this link. We cannot state how severely it will affect your chances if your story has poor formatting. We are expecting a massive volume of submissions for this call, and if it’s not formatted properly, it will slow down the entire process for us. Please consider this when submitting.

PAYMENT DETAILS:

Semi-professional rate of 2 cents per word, minimum of $30 and maximum of $100, which will be paid before publication.

ALL PAYMENTS WILL BE PROCESSED THROUGH PAYPAL

HOW TO SUBMIT:

== Send all submissions and inquiries to gehennapublishinghouse (at) gmail (dot) com.
== Manuscript must be properly formatted and edited before anything else. See format guidelines here.
== Title email as follows: (Type of Submission/Chapbook Theme)/(Title of Story)/(Name) Example: Novella/Fragile Dreams/Fracassi, or Nightscapes/Origami Dreams/Padgett
== Attach properly formatted manuscript to email as either a DOC, DOCX, or RTF file. No others are accepted. Do not include story in body of email. This will be grounds for automatic rejection.
== Include in the body of your email, or as a cover letter to your manuscript, a short bio including any publication history, awards, social media links, etc.

RESPONSE TIME:

We are expecting a MASSIVE amount of submissions for these calls. Please allow 3-5 months for a response before querying. These titles will be released over the next 12 months, so it will take some time to get back to everyone who has submitted. If you don’t receive a story receipt confirmation within 48 hours, PLEASE CONTACT US IMMEDIATELY. The story may have been filtered into our spam. We will more than likely respond to all submissions long before the 5 month point, but we are setting these times as a precaution.

If you are under the age of 18, unfortunately, we cannot accept your submission. These releases will be for an adult audience, and because of this, we require all authors to be of legal age to read and/or submit to it.

Finally, if accepted here and then republished, you are required to cite the release in which you were published.

1 June 2018 -- Tales from the Crust -- ed. David James Keaton and Max Booth; Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing

We know we have a tendency to say, "Attention writers! Some new hotness!" but this is literally some new burn-the-roof-of-your-mouth hotness. Inspired mostly by David James Keaton’s struggle to find good pizza in California and pitching ideas to Max Booth when he’s hungry after working a 12-hour shift at the Overlook, get ready for…

TALES FROM THE CRUST: An Anthology of Pizza Horror

edited by Keaton and Booth and published by Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing.

Originally Keaton was thinking of calling it PIZZA MY SKULL because there’s a pizza place around San Jose called Pizza My Heart, meaning "piece of my heart," and so he thought a "piece of my skull" joke would be hilarious. Turns out that's a lot of assumptions to make about a gag. Also their pizza is gross. Luckily, George Cotronis brainstormed a much better title (though it might make people wonder if there’s a "Crustkeeper/Cryptkeeper" hosting the show). Speaking of Mr. Cotronis! Holy lord look at the cover art he’s come up with. WE WANT TO LIVE IN THIS WORLD…

This is exactly the vibe we’re going for here. Not so much the goofy Goosebumps thing you might imagine with a pizza horror story, but we’re taking it kind of seriously. Like we take our pizza seriously. The humor is inherent in the pizza theme already, so we’re playing this kind of straight. And if you think you’ve got what it takes, like a healthy love of the cheesy cuisine, send us your best work.

Now, you may be thinking: pizza horror taken seriously? What the good goddamn could I possibly write?

Good question! We don’t know. But we sure would like to read it.

That’s where you come in.

Write us a pizza story, and make it scary.

Story length: 1k – 5k
Payment: $0.03 per word
Multiple submissions: Yes
Simultaneous submissions: Yes
Reprints: Query first
Deadline: June 1, 2018

Send submissions to pizzamyskull@gmail.com with “[STORY TITLE] – [AUTHOR NAME] – [WORD COUNT]” in the subject line.

5 June 2018 -- The Working Zealot's Guide to Gaining Capital in Pre-Apocalyptic America

I am FearBot3000.

I was programmed to notice breathless confusion across social media. Confusion often follows the infallible decrees of Lord Commander Patagonia.

Albeit infallible, sometimes his decrees require an algorithm to reach a state of clarity.

The title of Cockroach Conservatory Vol. 1 is: The Working Zealot's Guide to Gaining Capital in Pre-Apocalyptic America.

What are we looking for? Weird stories about cults, capitalism, working stiffs, and weirdos. We like bizarro. We like horror. We like our sci-fi and fantasy on the weirder side. We like humor. Think Joe R. Lansdale. Think Victor Pelevin. Think Brian Keene. Think Jessica McHugh. Really. This is a loosey-goosey guideline. The title obfuscates as much as it reveals. We know. It was done on purpose. Cults! Murder! Capitalism! Take it and run.

Word count: no more than 3000 words.

Payment: 6 cents per word.

Is that weird Soviet era sci-fi illustration of a robot the cover? No, it's just a public domain placeholder for this website. We have commissioned a local Austin, TX artist for the cover.

Poetry: Send no more than 3 poems. If accepted, we'll pay a flat rate of $10 per poem.

SUBMISSIONS ARE OPEN UNTIL JUNE 5, 2018. Anything submitted after that will go unread unless we announce an extension.

Send your stuff as a doc or docx file to RaceForTheRoaches@gmail.com. rtf file format will not be opened.

Subject line should read: SUBMISSION - [Your Name] - [Story Name/or Poetry]

Include a short bio in your email.

Try to follow this format. We don't need your physical mailing address.

We want first North American rights to your story on acceptance. Payment will be on publication. We'll send contracts out and exchange payment information on acceptance.

FearBot3000 returns to Sleep Mode.

[NOTE: Okay, this one's a little weird. There's no publisher mentioned. The Cockroach Conservatory seems to be the title of their anthology series. Might also be the publisher? I dunno; it doesn't say. There's no editor mentioned. Two people are listed as contributors to the blog; one or both might be editing the book, but they don't say. My sense is that these are a couple of newbies making it up as they go along, and trying for a "concept" sort of project. That's not necessarily bad. And they're paying pro rates, so there's that. Check out their site and see what you think.]

15 July 2018 -- Alternative Truths: Endgame -- ed. Jess Faraday and Bob Brown; B Cubed Press

The Premise

How will the current political nightmare end? The "Endgame" referenced in the title may be that it doesn’t end. It may be that it transitions, or it there may be a paroxysm of indictments (or a spaceship landing on the lawn, or a zombie apocalypse, or we wake from a dream).

What We Want

The third and likely final book in the best selling Alternative Truths series is looking for stories, poems, and essays. We welcome both serious works and works of humor, light and dark. In addition, we would love to see stories that cover the entire spectrum of race, sexual orientation, politics, etc. We’ll even publish Canadians!

Your vision is what we want — just no assassination fantasies, please.

As always, a share of the proceeds from sales of the book goes to the ACLU of Washington.

How to Submit

Send submissions in standard manuscript format to Kionadad@aol.com. Files can be .doc, .docx, or .rtf format. Be sure to include the words "Alternative Truths Endgame Submission" in the email subject line.

Word Count: 300 to 5000 words

Payment: Poems and flash fiction are paid by the piece. Everything else will be paid at $0.02 cent/word, paid on publication, plus shared royalties.

Queries encouraged.

31 July 2018 -- Innsmouthbreathers -- Martian Migraine Press

There are folks for whom the question of whether Cthulhu has two eyes or six is a vitally important one. Individuals that believe, somehow, that a dinner of tinned spaghetti and ice cream with a reanimated H. P. Lovecraft would be the height of both culinary and intellectual pleasure. Scholars who feel that The Horror at Red Hook is a timely warning about, well, you know… those other people. Esteemed biographers of weird fiction luminaries who reveal their foaming insecurity at the changing of the guard, or the form of a literary award. Entities who dissolve with glee at the slapping of some tentacles on a meme, thus rendering it "Lovecraftian".

Yes, they're out there, in their seeming thousands, trolling social media, fawning over the dead, podcasting their paranoia. Yes, they are slouching roughly towards Arkham and Providence and fabled Y’ha-nthlei, to dwell in fossilized canon and geeky glory, forever.

INNSMOUTHBREATHERS.

Martian Migraine Press announces an open call for submissions to our latest anthology project, INNSMOUTHBREATHERS: Cautionary Fables of Mythos Fandom! We are looking for humourous stories of a certain kind of Cthulhu Mythos fan: the rabid Lovecraft worshipper, the defender of the outmoded and outclassed, the pulp reader for whom Weird Fiction peaked somewhere in the middle of the last century. (The 20th, for those keeping track of such things!) We’re looking for tales that pit Innsmouthbreathers against all manner of real and imagined horrors: shoggoths with Social Justice agendas, politically active Deep Ones, enlightened Mi-Go, and Nick Mamatas*. Make them lovable, make them loathsome, make us feel their triumphs and defeats! Put us in their basements, their garrets, their comic shops and conventions and pop-culture covens, and put us in their Cthulhu parody t-shirts while you’re at it. Mmm, is that a cotton/poly blend? Only in black, you say? SOLD.

INNSMOUTHBREATHERS will be a mostly funny book. We’re going for light-hearted ribbing here, a send-up, a roast. Stories that are outright mean and nasty won’t play well within these pages. Remember, let they who have not geeked out over Lovecraft, even a little, even once, throw the first Shining Trapezohedron into the bay! And sure, we’re asking for yuks, but please don’t feel you need to dial back the weird horror. Mix it up, thrill us, chill us, make us laugh at ourselves.

Submission period closes 31 JULY 2018. The anthology will be released in early October 2018.

SUBMITTING

Please use Standard Manuscript format when submitting. That’s double spaced, left justified, Times New Roman or Courier or something at least readable, a header on the first page (at least) with your author info and word count and… well, you know the drill. RTF or DOC files preferred, but DOCx and text files also accepted. Obviously, you could send us something that’s not in Standard Manuscript format, but it will lower your chances of it being looked at seriously.

We will look at both original work and REPRINTS.

To submit a story to INNSMOUTHBREATHERS send an e-mail (with the story file attached, not in the body of the email) to: submissions@martianmigrainepress.com, with subject line: INNSMOUTH, title of your story, and your name.

LENGTH

For short fiction, we’d like to see anything from 1,500 to 5,000 words. If your story goes over 5k, please inquire first. Honestly, we’d prefer to see shorter, punchier stories.

FLASH FICTION: got something under 1500 words? Send it in. However, the following still applies…

NO POETRY.

PAYMENT

All accepted submissions will be paid .03CAD per word, via Paypal, as well as a contributor copy (paperback) of the anthology, and copies in all electronic formats (mobi, EPUB, and PDF). Authors are also entitled to complete access to all titles in the MMP ebook catalogue.

REPLIES AND QUERIES

We will try to acknowledge receipt of your submission within a week of its arrival in our inbox. The submission period itself will close on 31 JULY 2018 and we should be responding to all submissions, yay or nay, by early August 2018. If you haven’t heard from us by 15 September 2018, please query.

* We use Mr Mamatas here as a stand-in for any writer who dares to push weird and horror fiction into new, interesting places. Sorry, Nick, but you made your bed, sir.

31 July 2018 -- Life After All -- Less Than Three Press

Life After All — an apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic/pastoral apocalyptic LGBTQIA+ romance anthology — The end of the world is a dark, bleak place. Life is full of grit, misery, and barely scraping by. But if humans excel at anything, it’s making the best of a bad situation, and the end of the world would be no different.

Less Than Three Press invites you to submit stories about life after the end of the world being far from bleak and hopeless. We want to see stories of hardened apocalypse survivors building new lives and homes with their found families; gentle robots terraforming the ruined remains of the Earth; your post-Earth space settlers slice-of-life.

THE DETAILS:

== Put SUBMISSIONS: TITLE (where TITLE is your title) in the subject line.
== Stories should be at least 8000 words and should not exceed approx 15000 words in length.
== Stories must be about a post-apocalyptic society.
== Stories must have a happily ever after (HEA) or happy for now (HFN) end.
== Any sub-genre is gladly accepted: sci-fi, mystery, contemporary, steampunk, etc.
== LT3 always welcomes representation of all genders and nonbinary or agender characters.
== All usual LT3 submission guidelines apply.

Life After All is a general release anthology, which means authors will receive a flat payment of $150.00 once LT3 has a signed contract. Authors will receive one copy each of the ebook formats LT3 produces and two copies of the paperback compilation.

Stories should be complete before submitting, and as edited as possible — do not submit a first draft. They can be submitted in any format (doc, docx, rtf, odt, etc) preferably single spaced in an easy to read font (Times, Calibri, Arial) with no special formatting (no elaborate section separation, special fonts, etc). Additional formatting guidelines can be found here.

Questions should be directed to the anthology editor, J., at jhong.writes@gmail.com (or you can ping them on twitter @heykaunlay).
